Refractive Error Treatment

Refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia occur when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing directly on the retina. Treatments include prescription glasses, contact lenses, or laser procedures like LASIK for long-term correction.

What is Refractive Error?
Refractive error is a common eye condition that occurs when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing directly on the retina. This leads to blurry or distorted vision. It can affect both distance and near vision, depending on the type of error.
Causes
Refractive errors can occur due to several reasons:
  • Myopia (Nearsightedness): Distant objects appear blurry. Usually inherited and develops in childhood.
  • Hyperopia (Farsightedness): Nearby objects appear blurry. Also often inherited.
  • Presbyopia: Age-related condition where the eye loses its ability to focus on close objects, usually noticeable after the age of 40.
  • Astigmatism: Caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea, leading to distorted or blurred vision at all distances.
Symptoms
  • Common symptoms of refractive errors include:
  • Blurry or hazy vision
  • Seeing halos or glare around bright lights
  • Eye strain or discomfort
  • Headaches
  • Squinting
  • Difficulty focusing while reading or using digital screens
Treatment
  • LASIK / PRK :Laser procedures that reshape the cornea to improve focus and correct vision problems.
  • ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) :A synthetic lens implanted inside the eye, used to treat myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism without removing the natural lens.
