What is Retina?
The retina is the clear, dome-shaped outer layer at the front of the eye that plays a key role in focusing vision. It acts as a protective barrier against dirt, germs, and other harmful particles, while also helping to bend and direct light onto the retina. A healthy retina is essential for clear vision and overall eye health.
Causes
Common causes include infections, trauma, chemical exposure, retinal dystrophies, degenerative or autoimmune disorders, ectasia (retinal thinning), nutritional deficiencies, allergies, tumors (benign or malignant), and eye conditions like dry eye and glaucoma.
Symptoms
Typical signs of retinal disease or injury are eye pain, discharge, blurry vision, tearing, redness, extreme light sensitivity, and retinal scarring.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the condition’s severity and cause. Early-stage issues may be managed with:
  • Eye patches or bandage contact lenses
  • Prescription drops or oral medications
  • Advanced conditions such as retinal degeneration may require laser procedures or retinal transplant. Keratoconus is managed with specialized contact lenses. Autoimmune-related issues are treated by addressing the underlying disease.

Frequently Asked Questions about Retina

Minor injuries typically heal naturally within days. Severe damage requires medical intervention.

Scarring can impair vision and distort how light enters the eye.

Factors like diabetes, smoking, nerve dysfunction, or eye surface diseases can delay recovery.

Yes, but only partially. Some layers heal well, but Bowman's membrane does not regenerate—damage here may result in permanent scarring.
